Accidental Death & Dismemberment
Insurance in Canada
1 What AD&D Actually Covers
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance pays a benefit in two situations: death caused by an accident, and the loss of specified body functions or parts caused by an accident. The word doing all the work is accident.
- Accidental death pays the full principal sum to your beneficiary
- Dismemberment or loss of use pays a percentage set out in a schedule
- Loss of sight, hearing or speech is commonly included
- Death from illness, cancer, heart disease, stroke, is never covered by AD&D
2 How the Benefit Schedule Works
AD&D policies express partial losses as a percentage of the principal sum. The exact percentages differ between insurers, but the structure is consistent.
| Type of loss | Typical share of principal sum | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental death | 100% | Paid to the named beneficiary |
| Loss of both hands, both feet, or sight in both eyes | Often 100% | Treated as a total loss under most schedules |
| Loss of one hand, one foot, or sight in one eye | Often around half | Percentages vary by insurer |
| Loss of thumb and index finger | A smaller stated percentage | Schedules go into considerable detail |
| Loss of use vs physical severance | Depends on wording | Some policies require permanent loss of use, others physical loss |

EGE Insurance’s accident programs bundle AD&D with other accident benefits such as hospital and fracture cover, see ACCI 7 PLUS.
3 Exclusions That Decide Claims
AD&D is cheap partly because the exclusion list is long. These are the ones that most often surprise families.
- Any death or loss caused by illness or disease, including a heart attack while driving
- Injuries sustained while impaired or committing a criminal offence
- Self-inflicted injury
- High-risk activities such as skydiving, racing or mountaineering, unless specifically added
- War, and in some policies acts of terrorism
- Losses occurring outside a stated time window after the accident, often 365 days
4 AD&D vs Life Insurance vs Critical Illness
Three products, three different triggers. Confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this area.
| Pays when | Covers illness? | Relative cost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life insurance | You die, from almost any cause | Yes | Higher, and worth it |
| AD&D | You die or lose a limb or function, by accident | No | Low |
| Critical illness | You are diagnosed with a covered condition and survive | Yes | Moderate |
If your household has no life insurance at all, that is the gap to close first, see how much life insurance do I need. If the concern is a serious diagnosis rather than an accident, see critical illness insurance. If you expect underwriting difficulty, no-medical life insurance covers that route.
5 When AD&D Is Worth Buying
AD&D earns its place as an inexpensive layer on top of proper coverage, or where accident risk is genuinely elevated.
6 What to Check Before Buying
- The definition of accident, and how the policy treats a medical event that causes an accident.
- The benefit schedule, what each partial loss actually pays.
- The time limit between accident and loss for a claim to be valid.
- Whether loss of use counts, or only physical severance.
- Excluded activities, particularly if you have hobbies the insurer counts as high risk.
- Whether you already hold AD&D through work or a credit card, so you do not duplicate it.
Summary: AD&D Insurance
- AD&D pays only for accidents, never for illness
- Partial losses pay a percentage set by the benefit schedule
- It is inexpensive because it is narrow
- Most deaths are caused by illness, which AD&D does not cover
- Treat it as a supplement to life and disability cover
- Check the time limit between accident and loss
- Check whether you already hold AD&D through work or a card
