Health and Dental Insurance
for People Without Workplace Benefits

Published November 4, 2026 · Updated November 4, 2026 · 6 min read · By EGE Insurance Advisory Team

Quick Answer

A personal health and dental plan pays part of what OHIP doesn't: prescription drugs, dental care, physiotherapy, massage and other therapists, and glasses. EGE Insurance compares plans from Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, GreenShield and Desjardins. Book a call and a licensed advisor will check the public programs you may already have, then call you with prices for your age.

1Who a Personal Plan Is For

Workplace benefits pay most of these costs for employees. If you don't have them, you pay out of pocket unless you buy a plan yourself. A personal plan is usually worth a look if you are:

  • Self-employed or working on contract, with no group plan. CRA rules may let you deduct the premiums from business income.
  • Leaving a job and losing workplace benefits. Most insurers have a plan with no medical questions if you apply within 60 or 90 days.
  • Retiring early, before age 65 and the Ontario Drug Benefit.
  • Paying for a regular prescription, therapy or dental work and wanting part of it back.

2What a Plan Pays For

Each insurer sells several levels. These are the ranges in the plan summaries the insurers publish for Ontario, from their entry plans to their higher plans.

BenefitEntry plansHigher plans
Prescription drugs60% to 80%, up to $500 to $750 a year80% to 100%, up to $5,000, $10,000 or more

Psychologist or counsellorIncluded on many plans, with a yearly limitHigher yearly limit
Glasses and contact lenses$150 every 2 years, or not included$200 to $300 every 2 years

From the plan pages of Manulife (Flexcare, FollowMe), Sun Life (Personal Health Insurance), Canada Life (Freedom to Choose), GreenShield (ZONE, LINK) and Desjardins (SOLO, Health Track), read November 4, 2026. Each policy wording sets the exact terms.

Many plans also pay toward ambulance trips, a semi-private hospital room and hearing aids, and some include a short travel benefit. Dental work like crowns and orthodontics usually waits 1 to 2 years and is only on the higher plans.

From each insurer's own plan pages. Which plans you can get depends on your age, health answers and province.

Plans with health questions give higher maximums but often exclude drugs for a condition you already have. Plans with guaranteed acceptance cover existing conditions with lower maximums. We will tell you which way fits you before you apply.

4We Check the Public Programs First

Some public programs end when you buy private coverage, so we look at them before we quote. A household with income under $90,000 and no dental coverage may qualify for the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan, which a private dental plan would rule out. People 24 and under get OHIP+ drug coverage only if no private plan covers them. If a public program covers you better, we will say so.

The full comparison, with what OHIP leaves out and how much plans cost, is in our guide to private health insurance in Ontario. For the dental side, see Canadian Dental Care Plan vs private insurance.

5What It Costs

Price depends mostly on your age and the level of coverage. Most insurers only give a price through a quote. Canada Life publishes examples: for a 25-year-old single person in Ontario, its Select plan is $80 a month and Select plus is $139 a month. Book a call above and an advisor will bring you prices for your age from the insurers that fit.

6How It Works

  • Book a call at a time that suits you, by phone or video, in your language.
  • We ask what you spend on drugs, dental, therapists and glasses, and which public programs you have.
  • We compare plans from the insurers we work with and explain the maximums, waiting periods and health questions.
  • You apply with the insurer you choose. There is a $0 advisor fee: the insurer pays us a commission, and your price is the same as buying direct.

7Frequently Asked Questions
