Accident Insurance Waiting Periods
and Exclusions in Canada
1 "Waiting Period" Means Three Different Things
People ask about the waiting period on accident insurance as if every plan had one. They do not. Depending on what the plan pays for, the phrase means something different, and mixing them up is how families end up surprised at claim time.
| Type of plan | What "waiting" means | Example from our plans |
|---|---|---|
| Accident plan | No waiting period for covered accidents, but strict deadlines after the accident | ACCI 7 PLUS: disability pays from day 1 |
| Disability income plan | A waiting period you choose between the start of a disability and the first payment | ACCI JET: 0, 30 or 119 days |
| Cancer or illness plan | A moratorium after the policy starts, plus a look-back for pre-existing conditions | CancerGuard: 90 days, and 24 months for pre-existing |
2 Accident Plans: No Waiting Period, but Deadlines
A pure accident plan does not make you wait. On ACCI 7 PLUS, the disability benefit is paid from day one once a covered accident puts you out of action. The trade-off is a set of deadlines that work like a waiting period in reverse: the claim has to start soon enough after the accident.
| Benefit | Deadline after the accident | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital benefit | Stay must begin within 30 days | 700 paid days in a lifetime |
| Disability benefit | Disability must begin within 90 days | 7 months per disability |
| Extended medical care | First expense within 30 days, care within 12 months | $100,000 in a lifetime |
| Accidental dental repair | Within 1 year | $10,000 per accident |
The upside of a no-health-questions accident plan is speed: iA Financial Group guarantees payment within 7 business days of a complete ACCI 7 PLUS claim, and pays $30 for each late business day, up to 7 days.
3 Disability Income Plans: The Waiting Period You Choose
Income replacement works differently. On ACCI JET, you pick the waiting period when you buy: 0, 30 or 119 days between the start of the disability and the first payment. A longer wait means you cover the first weeks yourself, from sick days, savings or other benefits, in exchange for a generally lower premium.
- 0 days. Pays from the start of the disability. The most protection, and the highest cost.
- 30 days. A middle ground if you have a month of sick days or savings.
- 119 days. Suits someone with an emergency fund or employer short-term disability that covers the first four months.
Three rules decide how the waiting period works in practice on ACCI JET:
- A relapse does not restart the clock. If the same cause recurs within 6 months (12 months for some occupation classes), no new waiting period applies.
- The business expense benefit waits 30 days. It pays rent, utilities and staff salaries while a self-employed owner is off work.
- Claims have their own deadlines. Notify the insurer within 30 days, send full evidence within 90 days, and 365 days is the absolute limit.
For how disability cover works more broadly, see our disability insurance guide, and for the self-employed, our disability insurance for the self-employed guide.
4 Cancer Cover: A 90-Day Moratorium
Illness-based cover protects the insurer against someone buying a policy after symptoms have already started. CancerGuard does that two ways:
- 90-day moratorium. No benefit if cancer is diagnosed within 90 days of the policy's effective date.
- 24-month pre-existing condition exclusion. Cancer resulting from a pre-existing condition within 24 months of the effective date is not covered.
What CancerGuard does not have is a survival period: it pays on a specialist's confirmed diagnosis. Many critical illness policies do require you to survive a set period after diagnosis; our critical illness insurance guide explains how that works.
5 Common Exclusions to Check
Exclusions vary by contract. These are the ones listed for ACCI 7 PLUS disability and CancerGuard; always check each contract for its full list:
| Exclusion | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Illness | An accident plan pays for injuries from accidents, not for illness, even serious illness |
| Self-inflicted injury | Injuries a person causes to themselves are not covered |
| War | Injury from war or acts of war is excluded |
| Criminal acts | Injuries from taking part in a criminal act are excluded |
| Impaired driving | No ACCI 7 PLUS disability benefit for injuries while driving impaired |
| Racing and paid sports | Racing, and sports played for compensation, are excluded |
| Cosmetic surgery and pregnancy | Excluded from ACCI 7 PLUS disability |
Some limits are benefit-specific rather than exclusions, and they catch people too:
- Fractures. Avulsion and chip fractures are excluded, and when several bones break in one accident, only the highest-value fracture is paid.
- Age. On ACCI 7 PLUS, benefits are reduced by 50% from age 70 and coverage ends at 80.
- Cancer types. CancerGuard excludes carcinoma in situ and Stage A prostate cancer unless the Prevention rider is added, and non-melanoma skin cancers unless they have spread.
Accidental death and dismemberment has its own list of exclusions; our AD&D guide covers them in detail.
6 Before You Buy: Five Questions to Ask
- Does it pay from day one? Accident cover often does; illness and income cover usually do not.
- What are the deadlines after an accident? Ask for the hospital, disability and medical-expense windows in writing.
- Which waiting period fits my savings? Match it to your sick days, emergency fund or employer benefits.
- What is excluded? Illness, impaired driving and paid sports are the common surprises.
- What changes with age? Check for benefit reductions at 70 and when coverage ends.
If you want accident cover with no health questions, ACCI 7 PLUS lets you build a plan and see your price online. A licensed advisor can walk through the contract terms before you apply.
