Visitors & Super Visa · Pre-existing conditions
Health changed recently? You may still get coverage
A new medicine, a change in dose or a new symptom usually means a visitor or Super Visa plan won't cover that condition for months. TuGo has an option that only needs the condition to be stable for the 7 days before coverage starts, for travellers aged 79 and under.
Or call (416) 477-1516, Monday to Friday 9 am to 8 pm, Saturday 9 am to 5 pm.
The usual rule: 90 days or more
Most visitor and Super Visa plans only pay for a pre-existing condition if nothing about it changed for a set time before coverage starts. That time grows with age. TuGo's own standard rule is a good example:
| Age when you apply | Must be stable for |
|---|---|
| 59 and under | 90 days |
| 60 to 69 | 120 days |
| 70 to 85 | 180 days |
| 86 and over | 365 days |
TuGo Visitors to Canada, standard stability rule.
TuGo's 7-day option
- What it is. An optional add-on called Unstable Pre-existing Medical Condition Coverage, bought with TuGo's Visitors to Canada emergency medical plan.
- Who can buy it. Travellers aged 79 and under on the day you apply.
- What it covers. A sudden, unexpected emergency caused by a pre-existing condition that wasn't stable, as long as it was stable for the 7 days before the policy starts.
- How much. Up to the coverage amount on your policy. It doesn't add to that amount.
- Super Visa. TuGo's Visitors to Canada plan is sold for Super Visas too. Ask us and we'll check the add-on fits your policy before you buy.
What "stable" means
TuGo counts a condition as stable when all of these are true:
- A doctor hasn't found it getting worse.
- No new symptoms, and no symptoms that are more frequent or more severe.
- No change in treatment and no change to any medicine for it.
- No new treatment received, prescribed or recommended.
Still not covered
- A condition that changed in the 7 days before the policy starts.
- A trip after a doctor advised you not to travel.
- A trip after a terminal diagnosis, or during palliative care.
- A condition with tests booked or waiting for results when the policy starts. Routine tests to monitor a condition with no new symptoms are fine.
- An emergency that started before coverage began.
Good to know
Will TuGo ask health questions?
Depending on age and coverage, TuGo may ask a medical questionnaire. Answer every question fully and correctly. If an answer is wrong or missing, an extra deductible can apply to a claim.
Does the add-on cost more?
Yes. It's an extra charge on the TuGo plan. You see the exact price on TuGo's secure page before you pay.
I'm a Canadian travelling abroad. Is there something similar?
TuGo's emergency medical plans for Canadians use shorter stability periods for some ages and trip lengths. Call us and a licensed advisor will check the rule for your age and trip.
Can you help me choose?
Yes. A licensed EGE advisor compares TuGo with the other insurers we work with, in your language, at no cost to you.
