2Student Insurance for International Students and Families
TuGo Student Insurance for International Students is for students on a study permit who study in Canada, full-time or part-time. It is one of the few student plans that can also cover family members who live with the student, such as a spouse, children or a parent sharing the home.
- Policy limit: $2,000,000 of emergency medical coverage
- Students can apply up to age 69; family members living with the student up to age 59
- Can be bought even if the student already has a government or school plan; TuGo then pays after that plan
- Coverage needs studies to start within 60 days of the effective date, and ends 60 days after studies stop
- Trips outside Canada are allowed, as long as the student plans to spend at least 51% of the time in Canada
- Not available for language programs taken for immigration purposes, such as francisation
Benefits that stand out on the International Students plan
| Benefit | International Students plan |
|---|---|
| Physiotherapist, chiropractor, naturopath and similar | Up to $1,000 per incident per practitioner |
| Psychologist, psychiatrist or counsellor (out-patient) | Up to $2,000 combined |
| Vaccinations and TB testing | Up to $150 per 12 months (policies of 180 days or more; not school-required TB tests) |
| Return of a vehicle after an emergency | Up to $1,000 |
| Return of remains, or burial or cremation where death occurs | $25,000, or $15,000 |
Pre-existing conditions must be stable for 90 days before coverage starts. Summary only: TuGo’s policy wording sets the exact terms.
3Student Insurance for Canadian Students
For Canadians studying outside their home province or abroad, TuGo has a separate plan. The two plans cannot be swapped: the wrong one for the direction of study is not valid.
- Policy limit $2,000,000; students up to age 40, and family members who live with them from 15 days old to age 40
- Includes accidental death and dismemberment with air flight and common carrier coverage up to $100,000
- Mental health: in-patient care covered like any emergency; out-patient counselling up to $1,000 combined
- Pre-existing conditions must be stable for 90 days before coverage starts

4The Sports & Activities Add-On
TuGo’s Emergency Medical plans already cover everyday activities such as hiking, ziplining, bungee jumping and parasailing over water. For higher-risk sports you add Sports & Activities coverage:
| Activity group | With the add-on |
|---|---|
| Backcountry skiing or snowboarding, freestyle skiing or snowboarding in competitions, downhill mountain biking, ice climbing, rock climbing and canyoneering, mountaineering, boxing, mixed martial arts | Up to the policy limit |
| Football, ice hockey and rugby in a registered team, league or tournament (ages 21 and over) | Up to the policy limit |
| BASE jumping, hang gliding and paragliding, skydiving, wingsuit flying, high-risk snowmobiling and motorized speed activities, diving deeper than 40 m, Class VI white water | Up to $500,000 combined |
Coaches and officials do not need the add-on. Never covered, even with it: rodeo-type events such as bull riding, barrel racing and chuck wagon racing.
Without the add-on, injuries from these activities are not covered. TuGo shares a real claim: a 19-year-old fell 50 feet while canyoning in Utah, needed surgery and a week in hospital, and TuGo paid about $202,000; the provincial health plan covered less than 1% of the bill.
