Quick Answer

JF Visitors to Canada is emergency medical insurance for visitors, Super Visa holders and newcomers who are not covered by a provincial health plan. It is underwritten by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada. You can choose an option that covers stable pre-existing conditions, judged on a 120-day stability rule, up to age 85. From age 86, JF still offers cover, up to $100,000 with a $500 deductible, but without pre-existing conditions. Call Ontime Care before getting care, or JF pays only 70%.

1What JF Visitors to Canada Insurance Is

JF Visitors to Canada is emergency medical insurance for people in Canada who are not covered by a provincial or territorial health plan. It pays for emergency care such as hospital stays, doctor visits and prescriptions after a sudden illness or injury. It is not a drug plan and it does not pay for routine care.

The plan is underwritten by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada. The facts on this page come from JF's Visitor to Canada Insurance policy dated July 27, 2026, and JF's rate card.

You pick one of two options when you buy:

  • With stable pre-existing condition coverage. A pre-existing condition that was stable for 120 days before the start date is not excluded. This option is for ages up to 85.
  • Without stable pre-existing condition coverage. Any symptoms linked to a pre-existing condition are excluded. This is the only option from age 86.

JF Visitors to Canada is not JF Royal

JF also sells a second visitor plan called JF Royal Visitors to Canada, underwritten by Berkley Insurance Company. The two are easy to mix up. This page covers JF Visitors to Canada, the plan EGE Insurance quotes.

2Who Can Buy JF Visitors Insurance

To be eligible, the person must be one of these, and must not be eligible for a provincial or territorial government health plan in Canada:

  • A visitor to Canada
  • A person holding a Canadian work visa or a Super Visa
  • An immigrant to Canada
  • A Canadian resident

The person must be at least 15 days old on the date of purchase. JF's eligibility rules set no maximum age. The age limits are in the plan options: the pre-existing option stops at 85, and cover from age 86 has its own rules.

If the person can get a provincial health plan, they cannot buy this plan. Settle that question first.

3How Pre-Existing Coverage Works

JF defines a pre-existing condition very broadly. It is any medical condition, sickness or injury for which the person, at any time before the start date, had symptoms, saw a doctor, had tests, was in hospital, was prescribed or took medication, or had a procedure. There is no look-back limit. A prescription written "as needed" counts, even if it was never filled. A test that found nothing also counts.

The 120-day stability rule

On the option with pre-existing coverage, a condition counts as stable if it is controlled by diet or by medication a doctor prescribed, and in the 120 days before the start date there was:

  • No new symptoms, no more frequent or more severe symptoms, and no symptoms still waiting for a diagnosis
  • No hospital stay and no referral to a specialist
  • No change in treatment, medication or dosage

A lower dose, or stopping a medication, because the person got better and a doctor approved it, is not a change. A condition that started more than 120 days before the start date and needed no treatment in those 120 days is also stable.

Who decides if a condition is stable

JF's claims examiner decides, from the medical records, when a claim is made. It is not checked or confirmed when you buy. So no one can promise in advance that a named condition will be treated as stable. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains how stability is judged.

4Health Conditions That Rule Out JF Cover

Some health conditions make a person ineligible for JF Visitors to Canada, even if the condition is stable and well controlled. Choosing the pre-existing option does not change this. The person is not eligible if they:

  • Are travelling against a doctor's advice, or have a terminal illness
  • Have kidney disease that needs dialysis
  • Have been diagnosed with congestive heart failure
  • Were prescribed or used home oxygen in the last 12 months
  • Have been diagnosed with or treated for pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, or any cancer that has spread
  • Have had, or are waiting for, a heart, kidney, liver or lung transplant, or a bone marrow or stem cell transplant
  • Have new or undiagnosed symptoms, or know of a reason to see a doctor

JF defines a terminal illness as a condition where a doctor estimates less than 6 months to live, or where palliative care has been received. Other insurers use different definitions and lists, so a no from JF is not a no from every insurer. An advisor can check the others for you.

5JF Visitors Insurance at Age 86 and Over

JF offers visitor cover with no upper age, which matters for older parents and grandparents. From age 86 the rules are different:

RuleUp to age 85Age 86 and over
Pre-existing condition optionAvailable, with the 120-day stability ruleNot available
Coverage amountsSeveral amounts, including $100,000 and up for a Super Visa$10,000, $15,000, $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000
DeductibleA choice of deductibles, starting at $0$500, fixed

From JF's rate card and the policy dated July 27, 2026. The policy wording sets the exact terms.

For applicants aged 86 or over, JF has a 15-day waiting period if the policy is bought after arrival in Canada.

At 86 and over, any symptoms of a pre-existing condition are excluded. For someone with a medical history, that means the plan mostly covers new emergencies that have nothing to do with past conditions. Our guide for parents over 70 covers older applicants in more detail.

6Coverage Limits and Benefits

Beyond the hospital bill, JF pays fixed amounts for some care. These are the limits in JF's policy:

BenefitJF Visitors to Canada
Emergency dental pain relief$500
Dental repair after an accidental blow$3,000
Physiotherapist, chiropractor and similar$500 per practitioner
Follow-up doctor visitsCovered
Prescriptions per emergency30-day supply
Acupuncture$500 on a 365-day policy

Limits from JF's policy dated July 27, 2026, as shown on our approved comparison of GMS, JF and Secure Travel.

Refills of medication for a chronic condition are not covered, on either option. If your parent takes daily medication, plan to buy refills in Canada yourself, or bring enough for the stay.

7Using JF for a Super Visa

JF Visitors to Canada lists Super Visa holders among the people it covers, and it can be bought as a 365-day policy for a Super Visa stay.

Before you buy, check the coverage amount and length IRCC asks for in our Super Visa requirements guide. From age 86 the highest JF coverage amount is $100,000, so match the policy to what the application needs.

If the Super Visa is refused, JF gives a full refund when you send the refusal letter before the start date. See the refunds section below.

8Call Ontime Care First and Direct Billing

JF's assistance line is Ontime Care. Call it before getting care. If no one calls Ontime Care before treatment, JF pays only 70% of eligible costs, up to $150,000. Save the number in your parent's phone on the first day.

Paying up front or direct billing

JF's partner clinics bill JF directly, so there is nothing to pay up front. This applies on JF plans with a $0 deductible and stable pre-existing coverage. Otherwise you may be asked to pay first and claim the money back.

9Refunds and Claims

10What Is Not Covered

These are the main limits that come from JF's own rules. The policy wording lists every exclusion.

  • Symptoms of a pre-existing condition, on the option without pre-existing coverage and at age 86 and over
  • A pre-existing condition that was not stable for the 120 days before the start date
  • Refills of medication for a chronic condition, on both options
  • Anyone who is eligible for a provincial or territorial health plan
  • Anyone with one of the conditions that rule out cover, such as dialysis, congestive heart failure or a terminal illness
  • Part of the cost if Ontime Care is not called before care: JF pays only 70%, up to $150,000
