Why It Matters
Everything You Need to Know About
Travel Insurance in Canada
We compare travel insurance plans from top Canadian insurers and explain coverage clearly — so you can travel with confidence, not uncertainty.
Why Travel Insurance Matters
Provincial health coverage outside Canada is very limited. A single day in a US hospital can cost $10,000–$30,000. Travel insurance protects you from bills that could follow you home for years.
- OHIP and other provincial plans cover very little outside Canada
- USA medical costs are among the highest in the world
- Some visas require proof of travel insurance to be approved
How EGE Insurance Helps
As a licensed brokerage, we compare plans from 15+ Canadian insurers side-by-side. We explain deductibles, exclusions, and pre-existing condition rules in plain language — no surprises.
- Clear comparison across top Canadian insurers
- Plain-language guidance on what is and is not covered
- Support from departure through to claims if you need it
Who Needs Travel Insurance
Travel insurance isn't just for long international trips. Any time you leave your home province, your provincial coverage may not apply fully — including travel within Canada.
- Canadians travelling to the USA, Europe, or anywhere abroad
- Travellers visiting destinations with Schengen visa requirements
- Anyone doing outdoor, high-altitude, or adventure activities
Coverage Types
Emergency Medical Coverage vs. Non-Medical Coverage
Travel insurance is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding what each coverage type protects helps you build the right plan for your trip.
Emergency Medical Coverage
The core of any travel insurance plan. Covers eligible emergency medical expenses if you become ill or injured while travelling — often up to $5 million.
- Emergency hospitalization and physician fees
- Ambulance and air ambulance transport
- Emergency surgery and diagnostic tests
- Emergency prescriptions and medications
- Emergency dental treatment (injury or sudden pain)
- Medical repatriation back to Canada when required
- Return of remains in the event of death abroad
Coverage subject to policy terms, stability requirements, and insurer eligibility.
Non-Medical Coverage
Protects your financial investment in the trip itself. Covers losses that have nothing to do with your health — like cancellations, delays, or lost luggage.
- Trip Cancellation — if you can't travel before departure
- Trip Interruption — if you must cut the trip short
- Flight Delay — meals and accommodation for significant delays
- Baggage Loss — reimbursement for lost or stolen luggage
- Passport Loss — replacement costs abroad
- Personal Liability — if you accidentally cause damage or injury
- Personal Accident — accidental death and dismemberment benefit
Non-medical coverage is often available as an optional add-on or bundled with medical plans.

Your Provincial Health Plan Has Limits Outside Canada
Many Canadians assume their provincial health card works abroad. It doesn't — at least not in any meaningful way.
What provincial plans typically cover outside Canada
- OHIP (Ontario): up to ~$400/day for in-patient hospital care — US hospitals often charge $5,000–$30,000/day
- Most provinces reimburse at the home province rate — not the destination country rate
- Air ambulance, evacuation, and repatriation are typically not covered at all
- Provincial coverage often ends the moment you leave the country
Provincial out-of-country coverage rules vary and change over time. Always confirm your province's current policy before travelling.
Important: notify your insurer within 24 hours
If you need emergency treatment while travelling, most travel insurance plans require you to call the 24/7 assistance line as quickly as possible — often within 24 hours of receiving care. Late notification can affect how a claim is processed.
Trip Cancellation & Interruption
What Happens If You Can't Go — or Have to Come Home Early?
Trip cancellation coverage protects the money you've already spent on prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if an unexpected event forces you to cancel or cut the trip short.
Common covered cancellation reasons
- Sudden illness or injury of you or a close family member
- Death of a covered family member before departure
- Involuntary job loss after purchasing the policy
- Natural disaster or severe weather at your destination
- Government travel advisory issued after booking
- Mandatory quarantine or illness diagnosed before departure
Covered reasons vary by insurer and policy. Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) upgrades are available on select plans.
Trip interruption — if the trip is already underway
- Emergency return airfare if you must fly home early
- Unused, prepaid, non-refundable accommodation costs
- Additional accommodation costs if you are stranded
- Cost of a companion flying out if you are hospitalized
Planning an Adventure Trip? Standard Coverage May Not Apply
Standard travel insurance policies commonly exclude high-risk activities — particularly anything above 4,500 metres (approximately 14,800 feet) in altitude, or activities classified as extreme sports.
EGE Insurance can identify plans with adventure sports riders that extend coverage to high-risk activities.

Single Trip vs. Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance
The right plan type depends on how often you travel and how long each trip typically lasts.
Annual Multi-Trip Insurance
One annual premium covers an unlimited number of trips throughout the year. Each trip is covered up to the maximum trip length shown in your policy (typically 15, 30, or 60 days per departure).
- Best for 2+ trips per year — usually more cost-effective
- No need to buy a new policy before every departure
- Convenient for business travellers and frequent vacationers
- Coverage begins automatically on each new departure date
Single Trip Insurance
Covers one specific trip with a defined start and end date. Ideal for longer trips that may exceed the annual plan's maximum trip length, or for travellers who only take one or two trips per year.
- Covers trips of any length — including extended stays
- Ideal for one long trip (e.g., 90–180 day snowbirds to Florida)
- Best value for travellers who take 1 trip per year
- Can include trip cancellation and non-medical add-ons
